The Great American Family Roadtrip....
Many of us, no matter how old or young we are, still hold in our
memories the car trips we took with our families. These memories
are the foundations of our ideals about fun and family bonding.
Here are some helpful and fun tips for making your next family
roadtrip a pleasant one!
- Other than at church, when is the last time your family sang
together? Have a singalong! Bring tapes or cds if you are not
likely to catch what you want on the radio.
- Make a funbag. A funbag contains small, individually wrapped
inexpensive toys and treats, and comes with a very simple rule...
each kid gets to open a single present every (hour, two hours,
hundred miles, blue volkswagen beetle, etc).
- Bingo!
- Have a rolling poetry slam.
- Snacks are good, they fill the hole and help prevent travel
sickness.
- Little bladders need emptying often, and bordom never helps.
Kids will remember parents with 'get-there-itis' as much as they
will the Grand Canyon!
- Stop often, even if you do not need to. Stretch.
- Smile. Believe it or not, it will elevate your mood a little
and helps to keep you awake. This leads to....
- Don't drive tired. It is as dangerous as drinking and driving.
- Have 'car rules'. A good rule for safety is that the driver
has privileges such as radio station or heater levels.
- Soft toys are good. They are less likely to cause damage when
thrown (toddlers), less likely to get lost, and easier to pack.
- Share with your kids a nice memory of a family vacation when
you were a kid.
- Avoid bringing things that keep kids attention focused
inside the car like books, cards, or videos. They will get carsick!
- Have extra patience with your kids. They are not comfortable,
you are not comfortable, the relief is in getting there. Let's
make the best of it!
