Here are some GREAT tips for family air travel....
- Be aware of the new heightened security checkpoints and allow
more than an hour to check in.
- If you have pepper spray on your keychain, leave it in the car.
- Do not make jokes, even innocent ones, during security checks.
The guards take their jobs very seriously and are required to
pull jokers aside for closer inspection. If you are traveling
with teens, make sure they know what to expect.
- Sharp objects are prohibited in carry-on. Leave metal nail files,
pocket knives, corkscrews, and sewing kits with scissors. You
can take these, just not in carry-on.
- Visit the toilets before getting in line.
- Carry books or a cd/mp3 player for amusing kids while waiting
in lines. Be aware that these electronics are not allowed to be
used during part of the trip as they can potentially interfere
with communciations.
- With kids in tow you may be able to jump queue with permission
from the airline personelle. Try catching their eye and smiling.
(Note: they do not have to do this!)
- Do report unattended luggage and suspicious activity in the
airport.
- Dress for comfort, not fashion.
- Get on the plane first and off the plane last to get a better
chance of assistance from cabin crew.
- Carry snacks. Expect long lines at food outlets in the airport.
You may be rushing to get to the gate and not have time to wait
in yet another queue to buy food or water for hungry young travelers.
- You can save money with a toddler in your lap, but consider
comfort for both of you. See how long you can last with him/her
on your knee in the armchair at home before you decide.
- Carry ziplock bags for disposing of soiled diapers along with
a non-aerosol non-flammable can of air deodorizer. Remember, smells
can leave the plane as easily you can!
- Consider booking seats apart from one another if traveling with
a spouse. The adults can 'double team' the kids... one adult can
rest while the other entertains the kids.
